Cotes du Rhone
Between Lyon and Avignon the Rhône moves in the direction of the Mediterranean, weaving between the Alps and the Massif Central, dotted with villages and hills.
It is here that the Côtes du Rhône appellation has claimed its vines. Fifteen hundred producers, 75 cooprerative cellars and 40 wine merchant firms belong to this appellation, the second largest in France.
In the northern part of the region the continental influence is evident, while in the southern part, near the beautiful city of Avignon, the climate and the Mediterranean sunlight reign, accompanied by the Mistral, which is very beneficial to the vines.
This is where the lion’s share of the wines are produced; about 95% of the reds.
In soils made up of stones, sand, or pebbles in clay, these wines are very colorful, aromatic and supple in mouth. They are characterized by dark fruits and spice due to their blend of three main varietals, Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre.
Dominant varietals: Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah, Marsanne and Roussanne
