Vacqueyras
In close proximity to Gigondas, this cru only dates back to 1990. It is the result of the efforts of the winemakers, notably to limit the outputs to 35 hL/ha, that sought to enter into the arena of the fine wines of the Rhône.
With 1,230 hectares, this appellation is about as large as Gigondas and also produces white wines; though the reds represent 95% of the production. Besides Grenache and the other typical varietals of the region, Cinsault makes a noticeable appeareance (at least 25%).
The reds are very aromatic, with notes of black cherries and a hint of anise. The whites, made from the Clairette, Grenache Blanc and Bourboulenc varietals, have a fresh taste and floral aromas.
Dominant varietal: Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah
