Chateauneuf-du-Pape
Near Avignon, the Popes chose this village to be their summer residence in the fourteenth century.
The grandeur of these wines stem from their magnificent terroir: a high terrace of large quartz pebbles smoothed by the Rhône and mixed with sandy, red clay.
Bathed in sunshine, the pebbles give off heat during the night that was stored during the day, which allows for an exceptional ripening of the grapes.
These wines give weak production yields and, whether white or red, are full-bodied and concentrated.
Their complexity comes from the number of varietals authorized (up to 13) such as Grenache and Syrah for the reds, and they have a bouquet that opens up with notes of red and black berries, leather, anise and spice.
The whites are marvelously floral with very fragrant hints of honeysuckle and narcissus.
Dominant varietals: Marsanne, Rolle or Vermentino, Roussanne
